Toasted bread (homemade from this recipe)
smashed avocado
marinated kale
a smashed soft-boiled egg
plenty of salt, pepper, lime juice and red pepper flakes

I just realized I used “smashed” to describe both the avocado and the egg - so, from this point forward, I’m going to call this snack smashed toast.

It is great as a hangover cure.

I went camping last weekend with a group of new friends. I had the perfect gear thanks to my friend amy and although the weather was cold, the campfire kept our faces warm and the whiskey worked from the inside. Although, we had to keep the whiskey hidden. In fact, we had to keep all our alcohol hidden. Bass River State Forest prohibits alcohol, but we weren’t really very worried about it. Several of the ladies took a trip to the liquor store to stock up for the evening and while we were gone, the police showed up looking for trouble at our campsite. They announced that alcohol was not allowed and asked to look in several coolers, luckily all the coolers they checked were filled with food. Thank goodness we’re a group of gourmet campers. They did find two empty bottles of wine, and of course when they asked, “Is this all you have?” Our group quickly answered, “yes!” The police made it clear that if they came back later and found any alcohol they would ticket everyone. They claimed they would search the cars and the tents, as well. Which seems absolutely illegal to me, but I wasn’t there to question them. The cops left about 10 minutes before we returned triumphantly with cases of beer and liters of bourbon. Which we ultimately hid in the covered bed of Zozo’s truck. We poured the beer into cups and waited until we were under the cover of night to pass the bourbon bottle around. The cops did drive by a few times that night, but never stopped, so we were still able to get a lovely camping buzz and remain ticket-free.

And now on to the food, as we all know that is my favorite part.

I made homemade marshmallows. regular and cayenne. They were fantastic. Super easy to make and you have not lived until you’ve eaten a homemade s’more. I used Alton Brown’s recipe, because marshmallows seem sort of scientific, and he’s practically a scientist. To complete the s’mores awesomeness, I brought hershey’s minatures - not just regular chocolate, the variety pack - so you could make a Mr. Goodbar s’more or a krackel or special dark s’more. I also bought some of the english “biscuits” with the chocolate already on top. They have a completely different flavor from the graham crackers, and since you know you’re going to have more than one s’more (it’s in the name) you might as well have a variety of options. To say they went over pretty well would be an understatement. There was a moment when Jaweer had to leave the circle so that she could “properly enjoy” her creation. We could hear the moaning even though we couldn’t see the ecstasy on her face.

I also made cornbread muffins, vegetarian ones with chipotle peppers and monterey jack cheese and bacon ones with jalapeno and cheddar. They were the perfect accompaniment for the stews and jambalaya that other people were making, and after we’d eaten, I put them in a metal bowl near the fire so they stayed warm for snacking throughout the night. The other savory dish I made was collard green coleslaw. It was great for camping because I chopped all the greens, cabbage, carrots and peppers before we left and mixed the marinade in a jar, then I just brought it to a boil over the campfire and tossed it all together, table-side as it were. A great healthy vegetarian option that is also a big crowd pleasure. My final contribution was birdle. This is my own creation. Basically it’s peanut brittle, but with seeds instead of nuts. It’s wonderful to snack on and we also incorporated it into the s’mores.

After playing trivial pursuit in the afternoon (btw - the sea of showers is on the moon), we spent the evening around the campfire with a guitar and a fiddle. It was fantastic. I tried taking some pictures, but it was too dark without the flash, and with the flash, everything lost its magical quality. So, instead of snapping pictures, I just switched my camera to video and filmed the fire. Doing this also captured all the sounds happening around the fire. I wasn’t sure how well it would turn out, but it was really amazing. So I’ve now started a new project! firesounds.tumblr.com. I intend to spend alot of this summer around a campfire, so I think this will be a great way to document it.
